Best AI image generators, compared honestly

These five tools are not interchangeable. Midjourney wins on how the image looks, Ideogram is the only one that spells, Firefly is the only one that will indemnify your client work, and Canva is the one a marketer can actually finish a project in.

Disclosure: only two of these five run affiliate programs — Adobe and Ideogram. Midjourney, Canva and Leonardo are here because leaving them out would make the comparison useless, not because they pay us.

Before you buy for client work: only Adobe offers IP indemnification on its paid plans. Midjourney, Ideogram and Leonardo grant commercial usage rights, but they do not indemnify you if a rights-holder objects. For agency deliverables, that difference is worth more than any feature comparison.
In detail

The three that matter

What each one is genuinely best at — and where it falls down.

Adobe Firefly — best for commercial work

$9.99/mo Standard · 2,000 credits · free daily generations

Winner

What works

  • Licensed training data plus indemnification — the actual reason to pay.
  • Generative fill and expand inside Photoshop save real retouching hours.
  • Consistent output across Express, Photoshop and the standalone app.

What doesn't

  • Raw image quality trails Midjourney noticeably.
  • 2,000 credits disappear fast on video and high-res batches.
  • Best value only if Adobe is already part of your stack.

Verdict: the professional default. You are buying risk reduction and workflow, not the best pictures. At 85% of the first month, it is also the strongest affiliate earner here.

Visit Firefly

Midjourney — best image quality

$10/mo Basic · $30 Standard · no free trial

Best quality

What works

  • The default look is better than everyone else's best attempt.
  • Style references and character references hold across a series.
  • $10 to start, and Basic is enough to learn on.

What doesn't

  • No free trial, so you cannot test before paying.
  • No public API, which rules it out for automated pipelines.
  • No affiliate program — promoting it earns you nothing but trust.

Verdict: if the image is the product, pay the $10 and stop reading. If you need words, legal cover or automation, it is the wrong tool.

Visit Midjourney

Ideogram — best for text in images

$20/mo Plus · $60 Pro · limited free credits

Typography

What works

  • Spells words correctly, which sounds trivial until you need a poster.
  • Layout and composition feel designed rather than accidental.
  • Batch generation on Pro for high-volume social work.

What doesn't

  • Photorealism is behind Midjourney and Firefly.
  • Commission rate is not published, so you can't model earnings.
  • Free credits are limited enough that testing is brief.

Verdict: keep a $20 subscription if typography is part of your work. It saves more design time than any other tool on this page.

Budget

What a year actually costs

Credit top-ups are excluded — most heavy users buy at least one. Treat this as the floor, not the ceiling.

Uses the entry plan. Ideogram and Canva pricing assumes annual billing where that is the advertised headline.

With annual billing (~20% off)—

Add roughly 20–40% for credit top-ups if you generate daily.

FAQ

Image tools, answered

Can I sell images made with these tools?

Generally yes on paid plans: Midjourney, Ideogram, Leonardo and Adobe all grant commercial usage rights to paying subscribers. Adobe additionally indemnifies business customers. Check each vendor's terms for restrictions on specific uses — and never claim the output is human-made where disclosure is required.

Why is there no free Midjourney trial?

Midjourney discontinued free trials because of abuse. There is a limited trial in the niji·journey mobile app, but nothing on Discord or the website. Budget $10 for a month to evaluate it.

Does Canva have an affiliate program?

It exists but is closed to new applicants as of 2026, so there is no link to earn from. If you need a Canva alternative that pays, Adobe Express sits in the same Adobe affiliate program at 85% of the first month.

Which pays best for affiliates?

Adobe at 85% of the first month on a $19.99–$49.99 plan is the strongest per-sale payout. Ideogram is reported at up to $417 per sale but the rate is not published publicly, so apply and check the dashboard before building a page around it.

Do I need a GPU?

No. All five run in the browser. Local options like Stable Diffusion are a different category and need hardware — that is why the subscription price is usually cheaper than the electricity for occasional use.
