SE Ranking vs Semrush: which one should an agency actually buy?
Ten dollars a month separates the entry plans, which makes the decision look trivial. It is not. The real difference is how much keyword data that money buys, whether AI-visibility tracking is included or sold as an extra, and how much of the client report you still assemble by hand.

Data or deliverable
If keyword volume decides it
Core at $129/mo tracks several times the keywords Semrush's Pro allowance covers, and AI visibility is part of the plan rather than an add-on. The right buy when the work is finding gaps, briefing writers and tracking results.

Where each one earns the subscription
SE Ranking: more keywords per dollar
What works
- Keyword allowances that cover a real client list without an upsell.
- AI visibility included, so you are not pricing a second tool into every retainer.
- A 14-day trial is long enough to import your own data and see the gaps.
What doesn't
- Backlink index is thinner than Semrush or Ahrefs.
- Reports need rearranging before a client sees them.
- Extra projects push you into a higher tier.
Semrush: the report writes itself
What works
- Competitive and backlink coverage broad enough to replace two subscriptions.
- AI Visibility Toolkit puts prompt tracking next to keyword data.
- Exports that look finished, which is what clients pay for.
What doesn't
- $139 a month before the AI toolkit is added.
- Project and keyword limits arrive sooner than expected for agencies.
- Seven days is a short window to get a team to agree.
What a year actually costs
Entry plans only. Agency tiers cost more; model the plan you would actually need, not the one on the pricing page's first column.
Annual billing means paying up front. If you are testing whether the data is worth it, start monthly and switch once a client renews.
The recommendation
SE Ranking is the better buy for most agencies; Semrush is the better buy for the invoice
If your week is finding keyword gaps, briefing writers and checking whether the page moved, SE Ranking gives you more data for less money and includes the AI-visibility view. If your week ends with a document a client reads, Semrush's coverage and exports save hours that are worth more than the $10 difference. Do not buy both: at this overlap, one of them will sit unused.
Three questions agencies ask
Is SE Ranking a genuine Semrush alternative?
For rank tracking, site audits and AI visibility, yes — and it costs less per tracked keyword. Semrush still wins on backlink depth, competitive research and client-ready reporting. If the month's work is finding gaps and tracking results, SE Ranking covers it. If the month's work is proving results to a client, Semrush is the safer invoice.
Should I pay for both tools?
Only when a client pays for the overlap. At $129 and $139 a month they duplicate most day-to-day tracking. The common split is one platform for research and one cheaper tracker for client reporting. Pick one first and add the second when a retainer covers it.
Are the trials long enough to decide?
SE Ranking gives 14 days and Semrush gives 7. Test your own domain: import the keyword set you actually track and check whether the AI-visibility report covers the prompts your buyers type. Seven days is short for a team decision, so run Semrush's trial when the people who sign off are available.
